MONTEREY, CA (September 12th, 2015) – With the 2015 INDYCAR series championship already decided in dramatic fashion, rounds 15 and 16 of the 2015 Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda season provide a chance for the stars of the Mazda Road to Indy an opportunity in the spotlight for championship weekend, held on the famed Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca.
Looking to close out a rookie season that has turned many heads in the paddock, Anthony Martin and the #33 Burgess BLA / John Cummiskey Racing team headed west to complete an extremely successful season for both team and driver.
Friday’s qualifying was an intense battle for the top 4 contenders in the championship ending the session separated in time by just 0.55 seconds. A best time of 1:26.2923 around Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca netted Martin 4th on the grid for Race 1 in Monterrey.
Martin credited the 4th place starting position for a strong start to the race; “Everyone wants the inside for turn 1 so I was able to stay clean and get a run on the outside for turn 1, and used that to my advantage to carry more speed through the hairpin and overtake Jake [Eidson] through turn 2.”
Martin settled in following the great start, running 3rd when opportunity to strike again arose at the infamous “corkscrew” on lap 2. Martin was able to capitalize and overtake Aaron Telitz for 2nd place en-route to a 5th podium on the season, and 12th Top-5 in 15 events.
Martin’s focus now turns to closing out the season strong in Round 16, Sunday, September 13th on the twists and turns of Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca. Martin will again grid from 4th on Sunday, based on Friday’s established qualifying times.
